I totally agree with Carlos.  That's what we're doing with our Java
application.

Don't be too tempted to support jdk 1.4 to early.

I converted my (then starting) app to 1.4b1 and then b2 and b3. At each beta
I had to change/add several focus handling hacks to solve 
bugs in the betas.

And b3 still has more than annoying bugs. Jus't for starters: 

Key navigation doesn't work on menus.
Click a menuitem and the component below the clicked menuitem also 
receives the click event.

IMHO, don't vaste time on 1.4 betas - implement new needed features - 
refactoring, etc - and invest on 1.4 only when the final comes out.
