I believe they are going to try to fix this in the next release after Pandora, by using ClassLoader magic.

This happens to me too, with ZIPs and JARs that are in the project path also, not just items on the classpath. This happens with IDEA 2.x too However, it also used to happen with Jbuilder 4, so I'm not surprised. It's annoying but is it really IDEA? Could it be the JVM and/or ClassLoader that is hanging on to the .jar/.zips?
