IDEA automatically saves the file when necessary - which is
why there's no explicit command.  The easiest way to force
it is to switch to another application - whenever the IDEA
window loses focus it saves all files.

In either the Source or Project panes, you can right-click on the
folder in which you want the file and select New->...

hmmm...maybe because IDEA is more class oriented and
less file oriented.

Try selecting a folder in one of the above mentioned
panes - then the Edit->New item will be enabled.
