1. Switched to IDEA from a console window, and the program was frozen (no repaints)
2. Shut down IDEA
3. When IDEA was restarted, I could not open an existing project.  After selecting the .ipr file in the file dialog and clicking OK, nothing happens.  I can still use the menus though.  Trying to creating a new project will result in IDEA freezing after the "Finish" button is clicked.

We tried removing the system/cache directory, and removing all our IDEA config files (under config/options).  This didn't fix it.

After rebooting Linux, it worked again.
