Its well known fact that Sun's JDK is suck in terms of X fonts (well in fact entire graphics for Java2D is suck under X, b/c most of team seems to work with windows). I doubt that IntelliJ folkz will be able to hack that nut, b/c its pretty much hidden in JDK itself. And let me guess - you do have Nvidia card with your RedHat - wouldnt make rendering more pretty either. In fact its another cause or problems under Linux in my experience. I would suggest to use IBM's 1.3.1 instead of Sun's. Not only it would make your life faster by factor range from 1.6 to 7 (yeah. go figure that.. But i just finished another perfomance test and 1.4JDK got 76s(with -server option, and 80 without) and 1.3.1 IBM - 10s.) Plus IBM renders all truetype fonts properly.
