It depends on your preferences :-) As Phillip Ross correctly mentioned, IDEA's commander uses similar approach as NortonCommander/MidnightCommander/FAR/WindowsCommender use. Personally I don't use Project view, but instead Commander. And there are a lot of users that find Commander more useful than the tree-like views. There was a long discussion in this list about what is the commander and how to use it - you can search the list if you are interested.
