I used to be involved with FreeBSD ports, by the way. If anyone is interested in details: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/ Gentoo sort of evolved out of this idea. Talking to the homebrew community could be interesting!
