Indeed, goolf/1.6.10 and such from eb/1.9.0 should mostly do fine.
Just for the record: these bugs are often interpreted as an EasyBuild issue,
while it really IS about older GCCs + debian/ubuntu fighting together.
EB can help with automating the workaround though, if that is well-defined;
it seems it's not well-defined yet what the distro-creep has brought over here.
Hint: read the log outputs w. `less -RS /tmp/myeblogfile` from "configure"
onwards
and then google for the troubling cause on per-case basis...
