Have you checked that your default umask value is something reasonable?
I recall that different linux distros have different layout for default
user-groups,
and as a consequence provide different umask values. So, I'd suggest to check
that first.
(otherwise I'm doing exactly what you described w/out any issues, under a "sw"
user)
