the EB_GCC easyblock should not be thought of as cast in stone and,
in fact, at some point will require a bit of overhaul for proper generalisation.

I recall that it is written in a way which is not very helpful for, say, an 
older compiler
such as 4.1.2 to run across different distributions (cannot remember the 
details,
but my strongest realisation of that issue was actually triggered by a request 
coming from Riccardo early in the summer of 2014 - maybe Eigensoft against 
Ubuntu)

The summary of all this is that a bit of Continuous Integration against 
multiple distros
and compilers would not hurt but, no-one has found the time to do it, as 
desired.
