Dear John,

(you directed your message to easybuild-request@, I assume you wanted to target easybuild@ instead, so I've fixed the CC)

I would like to submit Java-10.0.2  as part of R-3.5.1.   How can I submit a package to easyconfigs that does not have public download for source?

To answer your question: just include a comment above the 'sources =' line that explains how to download the package manually.

We already have this in place in recent Java easyconfigs; see for example https://github.com/easybuilders/easybuild-easyconfigs/blob/master/easybuild/easyconfigs/j/Java/Java-1.8.0_172.eb#L10 .

I'm not sure we should go with Java 10.x already for the 2018b toolchain generation though... We limit ourselves to a single version of each dependency in a particular toolchain generation (unless there are technical reasons).

Can we expect that everything that required Java will work fine on Java 10?
My gut feeling says no, so we should probably stick to Java (1.)8 for a bit longer?

In addition, we're considering taking a slightly different approach for Java, which allows updating a Java dependency "in place" without having to re-generate all modules that use Java, see https://github.com/easybuilders/easybuild-easyconfigs/pull/6712 .

My hope is to start doing this for the 2018b toolchain generation.

Don't let this hold you back from submitting your PR for R 3.5.1 though; if needed we can update that easyconfig accoringly if/once PR #6172 is merged.

regards,

Kenneth
