It gets funny when looking into the destination directory: the file
already exists and has permissions '|-r--r--r--'. Hence, further

We're missing some context here...
What are you trying to install, and what is your EasyBuild configuration
like (what does "eb --show-config" produce as output)?
This sounds like it could be related to configuring EasyBuild with
--read-only-installdir, but even with that in mind I don't recall anyone
else reporting problems like this...
