Depends on your hardware, specifically sata controller. For 2.6.8 and on most
controllers are supported, for 2.6.12 they added more support for new
controllers (specially the intel ones).

Yes, it happened to me also. Maybe there's a misconfiguration.

I suggest you check if your controller is supported by Debian sarge[0].
You can go here[1] and paste your lspci -n and it will check it for you.
