Hi.
What kind of change did you made to the file? I've done a change in a 
client (he bought a new disk to mount as /home) and everything is 
working fine... For this new mount, I had to mount the new drive in a 
diferent mount point, stop samba (so that the users couldn't access the 
files), copy all the files with it's security settings, then unmount the 
old /home, edited fstab, changed the partition's UID, mounted, tested, 
reboot, tested, fine...
