Debian is Linux, and therefore Debian still uses init scripts. :) As does Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. You get some additional functionality using the an script over putting a line in rc.local, although the rc.local approach does work. If I can't get the script done tonight, I'll get it done tomorrow for sure.
