Either you mistyped your login and/or password, or something else goes wrong during the PPP exchange. I suggest that you take a look at /var/log/messages or /var/log/daemons.log to find out. Hmm, the strange thing is that the last version (0.3) shows pppd's output, in the output of startmodem, and that's not the case for you.
