Thanks for all your replies.
I finally managed to find out what was wrong. I compared my .project file  
to my other projects which did not have any problems and found an extra  
buildCommand entry in the buildSpec:
<buildCommand>
        <name>org.jboss.ide.eclipse.jdt.aop.core.AopProjectBuilder</name>
        <arguments>
        </arguments>
</buildCommand>

I have no idea how it got there, but when i removed it along with the
<nature>org.jboss.ide.eclipse.jdt.aop.core.AopProjectNature</nature>
entry, every thing was fine.
