Trust me... I've thought pretty hard about the whole thing.  Given the 
structure of the Eclipse build process and compiler this is really the 
only way to do things without rewriting the files in-place.  In-place 
processing is not viable for many people as it messes with source 
control systems and team environments.  The hook was never about my 
processing engine versus the Antenna engine... it was purely about 
providing the best user experience relative to the standard JDT tooling.

After spending two years to get to this point, I don't expect to remove 
the dependency on the hooks until the JDT provides a similar hook into 
their compiler.  That doesn't appear to be anywhere on their list 
despite numerous requests, offers to help and a significant number of 
votes in Bugzilla.  The hook is a pain to install, but once it is set up 
I believe it provides the best user experience.
