so I had not done the last bit of the install as you thought, thanks for
the link. So I have followed the sec 4 instructions as per
http://eclipseme.org/docs/installEclipseME.html
you/craig may care to note the following:-
my system is win XP home, eclipse 3.3.0, eclipseME 1.7.6.
the file 'org.eclipse.org_[version].jar' must have been re-named but all
the eclipseME jars were in the usual eclipse plugin dir with all the
eclipse "org.eclipse......" jars so I guess that's ok.
Re-started eclipse and found the following in the .log file:-

Strange that it should think the hook was already installed.
Saddly pre-processing does not seem to be working properly. My code has
the following snippet:-
//#if USING_TC65
import com.siemens.icm.io.file.*;

import javax.microedition.io.file.*;

I have a symbol set with USING_TC65 set to false. However the siemens
import is still being flagged as not resolvable and the FileConnection
interface is not being found which /is /in the javax file. (I know this
because if I delete everything except the javax import then the file
compiles without errors.)
I tried "//#if USING_TC65==true" but this produces a parsing error on
that line.
I've also tried deleting the USING_TC65 symbol from the symbol set but
this makes no difference.
Any help would be appreciated otherwise I'll have to find another
technique to be able to switch between import stmts. But I don't know of
any (using eclipse that is)!
I've also found the following:-
