The point is that right now we are not experimenting. I have people who are
running well tested well defined numerical simulations on a 24 hours duty
cycle. They do not need to learn new languages or experiment, but to get
things done. On a more relaxed environment with less competition we could
afford to start with new tools; right now we cannot.

Yes, for some time I tried to get someone who would do ECL development as a
computer science project, but it lead to nowhere. No company has also shown
any interest in hiring someone to do this work -- which I would have gladly
supervised.

That can never be an excuse. If anything, this shows the real problem:
software is not something for _one_ person to master, but for a community
to understand and deliver. My knowledge is not going to vanish and whoever
gets in as developer will have it as a backup and help if need be.
