When I download the "alternative" theme I get "nxthemes-theme-alternative.xml" as a proposed filename. So it is the theme id which is being used in that case.
the filename in theme-contrib cannot be used since theme-contrib actually contains a URL and the URL may be for instance: http://some.site.org/?theme=2
so to solve the problem one could call the downloaded file:
'theme-default.xml' or 'theme-alternative.xml', i.e. drop 'nxthemes-'
then I'm removing the last line which is blank.

When downloading a theme, it always has :
- the name is always nxthemes-theme-default.xml (shouldn't it be the name of the file in theme-contrib? + the date)
- the last line is blank
