Improve the error-notification system for the plugin users

A notification system exists but there might be some improvements needed. Here
are some perspectives:
UI:
- provide friendlier error-messages on the client-side
- explain why a certificate could not be signed (wrong password, CA signing
issue).
Logging:
- provide a proper amount of information appropriate for given logging levels.
Consider a policy on messaging on issues related to the certificate authority
setup
(this not to be confused with issues related directly to user certificate
creation or the signing process):
- should those be exposed to the client? If not: what message to give the
client: "Check with administrator" ?
- should they be specified as configurable message strings (which messages
would be generic enough)
