Normally i use the DejaVu fonts that are free to use in Linux and
Windows. (see license at
http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/License )
For Linux every major distribution have these fonts.
For windows the font can be downloaded from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dejavu

I'm not a lawyer, but I suppose that the license consent to include the
fonts in the package distribution (in the doc directory put a font
directory with yhe fonts and instructions about installing)
