That would require a network connection each time we display the summary tab
even when the user does not click on the PDF link + there would be no way to
display the informative error message which tells how to start openoffice in
headless + listen mode.


what do you mean here "require a network connection" ?
Ideally, the error message telling how to start OOo has not to be
displayed to the end user, client side but to the admin, server side;
This message is useless for the end user (well, usefull for us to
remember launching OOo on morning ;-) )
