Actually, in my search service contribution, the field is configured
automatically AND manually ;-) Looks like I was so desperate ...
To investigate, you might want to take a look at "RESOURCE CREATE" lines
in your logs (at DEBUG level) and compare the behaviour of
pv:insertion_date with dc:created
But if you say that it will be better in the future ...

you should probably modifiy in one way or another the
nxdocument.cpm.xml file that sits in
nuxeo-platform-search-compass-plugin.jar to declare your
pv:date_insertion property. You can model the configuration on other
date fields, like, e.g., dc:modified. The whole process is described
within the Nuxeo Book, here:
http://doc.nuxeo.org/current/reference/html/search-service.html#search-service-compass-mappings
and following.
We know this isn't convenient and are working on a better solution
for the future.
