It is 6 months old and was a GA release! The problem is now fixed. The problem is with the way ACE's are stored. I found that on some objects the permission was not set correctly and it failed to load the entire repository. It may be useful to alert on these errors and continual loading the repository instead of failing.

I modified; temporarily the getACE's function in JCRSecurity and where it failed to load the custom properties I had set them. Obviously I am not going to release with this code but it did repair the repository

This version is quite old, we are now at 5.1.3.2. Many bugs have been fixed since. You should upgrade.
