It is 6 months old and was a GA release! The problem is now fixed.
The problem is with the way ACE's are stored. I found that on some
objects the permission was not set correctly and it failed to load
the entire repository. It may be useful to alert on these errors and
continual loading the repository instead of failing.
I modified; temporarily the getACE's function in JCRSecurity and
where it failed to load the custom properties I had set them.
Obviously I am not going to release with this code but it did repair
the repository

This version is quite old, we are now at 5.1.3.2. Many bugs have
been fixed since. You should upgrade.
