I've developped a new plugin that creates a tab with the preview of the documents.
This plugin retrieves the documents using a restlet call and create a thumbnail (if the document is an image) or translate it to HTML (if it's not an image). The translation to HTML is done using an external command (you can configure the command to use for each type using an extension point). If you are interested I can submit it.
