It's possible to use VCS without the RA (most of the unit tests do it) but then you lose transaction awareness, JCA pooling, etc. And you have to use your own code to open and close the connection.
But your problem originates somewhere in your code using the CoreSession probably, we haven't observed the symptoms you have in stock Nuxeo or with standard customer code.
