I don't know if it is the same problem, but it may give you a lead: About 3 months ago, I had a problem where I was importing and exporting many documents via nuxeo core IO. I found that there were cases where the creation of a zip file was used and the implementation (I believe from Sun) *buffered* everything in memory until the zip file was either completely constructed or completely read. This obviously is a FAIL for big sets of documents.
