You can use any kind of file (either with the File document type, or adding it
to other type of document in the files tab).
You can add metadata to all of them (and relation, workflow ...)
by default, ppt, doc, pdf, odf ... will be indexed so you can search them.
If you are using a lot of multimedia file, you might consider using DAM.
