Hello, The template-project was not updated to 5.3 as it was a 5.2 "sandbox" project and we got very few feedback on it.
You may have a look at http://hg.nuxeo.org/addons/nuxeo-sample-project/ (5.3) and http://hg.nuxeo.org/addons/nuxeo-samples/ (1.6). You could also create a Jira task for upgrading the nuxeo-template project if you need it.
