Dear Hamad,
I don't know much about this particular area but wanted to help anyway 'cos not many resources are available back at home. Check out these:

1. The Institute of Industrial Engineers in USA (a good point to begin with)
http://www.iienet.org

2. They have a pretty good "Career Center" section on their web site. Most of your concerns are covered there. Check it out at: http://www.iienet.org/careercenter

3. Don't forget to read this article: Choosing a Career in Industrial Engineering
http://www.iienet.org/public/articles/index.cfm?cat=94

4. The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Industrial Engineering (resources around the world)
http://www.isye.gatech.edu/www-ie

5. Most of this info may apply to USA only, but it would be helpful to you in getting to know about your field. USA has more professional organizations than any other country thus it's easy to find professionally organized resources over here.

6. Don't feel bad if you left Telecom for this field. Although each field has its own pros and cons but looking at recent huge failures of telecom technology companies (Lucent, etc.), I personally would not have chosen that field. Let me also emphasize that to be successful in any field, you will have to strive to be the best. And I have seen so many students here coming from South East Asia doing exactly that - being the best! Even in Pakistan these days, many multinational companies (Philips, Procter and Gamble, etc.) have positions for Industrial Engineers. I would also get an MBA (from IBA or LUMS) on top of it to sweeten the deal for those companies, when looking for employment back there.

Hope this helps..
Take care,
- Amir

Salam!

I am about to start my First Year of Engineering on the 5th of January at NED and I got into the department of Indutrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Since I had never planned to get into this field (my choice was Telecomm), I am totally blank about what it is all about, the scope in Khi, Pak and world over, the pay scales, the target industries and specialisations.

Where can I expect myself to be employed after my Bachelors, and specialisations would be open to me?
