Wsalam, The research proposals is what they are looking for...I posted a similar note on our class group ( I think there is a blog )..this can be anything. My personal examples were:
Internet Land Speed Record ( NED to LUMS anyone ? )
Internet II
VLDBs
The IBM Eliza Project, etc etc
Research support is available in funds already at the dept's disposal...
Its high time the ex students give something back to the university....The Govt is hiring Ph.Ds for this purpose but only a very small number ( read none ) has been allocated to NED. Even though the webpage states that this be used as a rough guide, it clearly shows where the research is going to be. Here is the link :

I am not here to start a political debate on these things but I strongly believe that education starts from lower levels. It's the Bachelor's program which need to be revamped but there you go...bring in the Ph.Ds boys...
