PTCLs Research Development Fund Committee has approved a scheme at a
cost of Rs 40 million to boost research and development at small level
in the regions of Information Technology and Telecommunication.

The approval to the Thematic Research Grants Programme was given at
19th meeting of the committee headed by Minister for Information
Technology Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari. The programme will be initiated
under the PTCL RD Fund. A block allocation of Rs 40 million has been
made to this scheme for the current fiscal year. The programme will
have three competitive rounds of funding each year (once every four
months) and will distribute 12 research grants in each round (six
grants up to Rs 1 million and six grants up to Rs 2 million) for
research and development projects in areas of IT and
telecommunications. Under the programme, each round will have one theme
from IT and one theme from the area of telecommunications. The first
round of competition will be held within the next four months. The
themes of first round selected for funding are (i) ITU compliant packet
networks, and (ii) open source software. Details of these topics and
other aspects of these grants (including application details, dates for
submission and decisions) will be made available at the PTCL RD Fund
website soon.

The purpose of these grants is to reinforce and promote scientific
research in basic sciences in the country to strengthen the indigenous
capacity in science, and to reduce the exodus of scientific talents
from the country.
