Kylie, I indeed feel the VERY same pain, I don't think it is just the
trees, it is the Earth herself at the rape of her skin, it is all the
animals who have lost their homes, and possibly their children. It is
almost a collective consciousness of all the beings that have been
violated on that area which is "clear-slaughtered." I can't be around a
lumber yard filled with redwood, I start to really freak out. I feel
blood all around me, without any sacredness attached or acknowledgement
made for the tree lives that have been sacrificed. All I can really do
there is pray to Chen Rezig to heal it. This is not to say that I do not
occassionaly use redwood, we have no other wood in this area that works
(it's earthquake proof), but I must strongly protest against disposable
boxes sold to the Japanese, and indiscriminate use of these sacred
trees. There is, btw, more than enough lumber in the lubmer yards now to
make EVERYONE happy, as long as they are not into disposable lumber.
Sigh....so glad my house dates to 1873 and is made of redwood
(withstanding the 1906 and 1989 quakes), but also so glad that the trees are
back now!

A few days ago a new participant of the list posted a message where
she suggested to include some definition of ecofeminism and some
references for starters into ecofeminism on the ecofem-gopher-site (I
have not kept that message so the reference is not precise.)
The message has got no reply on the list so people are obviously not
interested in that which IMHO is a pity. I myself have reached the point
where I would like to go on to some introductory texts (at the moment
I am fighting my way through Women, Animals and Nature edited by
Greta Gaard). I am not an ecofeminist and have read this discussion
list since last October with the object to learn about that philosophy. It
is not the most efficient way to do so, although I have got a feeling of
what bothers people on this list.
If somebody knows of a book which a beginner in ecofeminism
_should_ read I would be interested in it. Perhaps, if it is not too much
work, the person which posted the original proposal could send me
the bibliography she has compiled. Thank you.
To keep the mail traffic low please respond privately if you do not think
it is of general interest. I will summarise the suggestions and post it to
the list.

I would also be interested in a definition of ecofeminism, and I think
there must be someone (perhaps a philosopher) who can provide a one to
the list. My introductory text was "Healing the Wounds: The Promise of
Ecofeminism" edited by Judith Plant, New Society Publishers, Santa Cruz,
CA, USA 1989. Another similar text-" Reweaving the World: The Emergence
of Ecofeminism" edited by Irene Diamond and Gloria Feman Orenstein, Sierra
Club Books, San Francisco, CA, USA 1990.
I am currently reading "Sacred Land, Sacred Sex, Rapture of the Deep" By
Dolores LaChappelle, who states that she is not an ecofeminist, but a
deep ecologist. Her philophosical position seems very akin to my own, so
I wonder about her distinction. Has anyone else read this book?
I would be interested in some more recently published books. Since I
don't have access to a good library, I have to build up my
collection as my wallet permits.

discussion and information exchange dedicated to the United Nations Fourth
World Conference on Women, Beijing Sept 1995.

***** A Brief History of the origins of BEIJING95-L & BEIJING95-WOMEN ****
BEIJING95-L was lanched on Sunday, January 22, 1995 as a women-only
discussion of the UN Conference on Women. On Wednesday March 8 in honor
of international Women's Day, Women's Wire announced a gender-inclusive
discussion forum dedicated to the UN Women's Conference which included a
read-only file of BEIJING95-L and is hosted by Jennifer Gagliardi
(moderator of BEIJING95-L & BEIJING95-WOMEN).
Because more and more subscription requests were being submitted by men,
on Friday March 17 1995, the moderator of BEIJING95-L posted to the list a
request for input on the subject of list membership. The vote was in
favor of keeping the subsciption-base for women-only with a significant
percentage in favor of opening the membership to men. On Saturday March
25 1995, the moderator then submitted a request to her internet service
provider (NETCOM) for the creation of a second, women-only discussion list
BEIJING95-WOMEN, with the intent to open up BEIJING95-L to both women and
men. At this time she also requested the creation of digest formats be
made available of both lists--this request was postponed indefinitely
until NETCOM upgrades its Majordomo MLM software. On Thursday March 30,
the moderator received confirmation of the creation of BEIJING95-WOMEN and
opened up the subscription of BEIJING95-L to one & all.

developed where women can engage fully in the process of self-definition &
self-determination, thereby returning with even greater strength to

gender-inclusive feminist forums and to pioneer more pro-feminist space on
