I disagree that the poor in the US and other developed nations are living
the life of royalty compared to the third world poor. In fact on behalf of
the very poor I am offended. There are people in the US who are homeless
and live on the streets. These people starve to death while their limbs
rot from gangrene. In Sydney Australia, young people are in a similar
position with no access to Social Security. The sight of a 12 year old
sleeping on the streets and starving is not unusual. In the north west of
Australia we allow our indigenous people to be without adequate clean water
and we allow epidemics of leprosy and other 'third world diseases'. Just
because we have the very richest (economically) people in the world doesn't
mean we can't have some of the very poorest.
I am not saying that the poverty in the third world is not real. What I
am saying is that we allow the most devastating poverty to go on in front
of our eyes. If we then deny that poverty by saying 'they really have it
quite good' we are even greater hypocrites.
