Greetings Ecofem'ers,
I am working on a project for a class titled, "Conservation
and the Human Predicament." My research focuses on ecofeminism- how
women represent nature and particularly how this image is or is NOT
used by the media to promote conservation and the idea of creating a
sustainable environment.
I'm sure most of you women (and men??) read magazines once in
a while... I am asking of your opinions/responses to what you find in
these popular magazines, such as SELF, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and
also men's magazines like Esquire, GQ, Details, etc. Oh- and I can't
forget non-gender magazines like Time, People, and National
Geographic.
Do you think that this image of women representing nature
would be successful in promoting conservation? Do you find that this
image is used (in articles or advertisements)? If not, why not?
Would you like to see more magazines focussing on conservation issues
and ecofeminism? Would magazines provide a good media resource to
promote awareness and conservation?
Have you noticed that many cosmetic and beauty product
companies emphasize that their products are made from 'natural'
ingredients? The current trend seems to urge women consumers to buy
products made from 'natural ingredients' such as brands like "Aveda"
and "Origins" not to mention many others. Do you think this
beauty-nature-women advertising is a successful marketing strategy?
What are the subliminal messages in
these advertisements (that buying these products are earth-friendly
or will make one feel close to nature?) ?? What type of impact do
you think this advertising might have on readers?
Thanks for your time... I really would appreciate your
comments. You may contact me personally or through EcoFem. Thanks
again for listening-- your feedback is important to me and would
greatly help my research project.
Sincerely,
Stacie Yung
