Hi. I too am interested in talking about "animal welfare" and associated topics. I received in the mail yesterday a newsletter from WWF Canada in which their campaign ideas for stopping world trade in engandered animals was described. The Nov. 7th-18th meeting in Florida of the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES) sounds like something to watch for. Does anyone have any information on this organization, its history, etc.? By way of a belated introduction, I am a doctoral student in the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. My research has been in publishing and cultural policy. I took a class last fall in "Knowledge Systems in Development" in which I read a lot of Vandana Shiva. I found her work fascinating. Personally, I am appaulled at the disregard for wildlife and wild spaces that is all too common and am hoping in some way I may be able to do something about it. Second question: Last spring I noticed a number of fascinating titles in the areas of Animal Rights at an academic bookfair. Unfortunately, funds weren't plenty at the time, and I haven't been able to find many "interesting" titles in local bookstores. I'd appreciate any suggestions and titles.
