i said in a previous post that rules and rule following was class related. The only response i got was one saying 'no it isn't'. So here i will briefly explain my position. The law that we follow was made up by mostly white, definately middle class or above, and probably all male. Law is just codified rules. This relates most though to class. The law says that stealing is illegal. The says that begging is illegal. The law says that being an itinerant (a person of no fixed abode) is illegal in some circumstances not clearly spelt out (basically you can be thrown in the lock up if the police feel like it. The law also operates that if you have more money you can get a better lawyer and will in most cases win. most low income people have no way of accessing the law. The law says it is legal to allow youth homelessness. The law says it is legal to allow people to starve. The law says starving is no excuse for stealing food. The law operates to say that black or poor people are immediately suspicious and can be harrassed. no consequences to the officer who harrasses a poor or black person because they've no money to fight. Rules are rarely fair. A woman who accuses a man of rape can now be charged wiht making a false accusation if the rape charge doesn't stick. And we know how many stick. The law is there for wealthy white men. So now tell me why rules are the same for everyone.
