ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION / COMMUNICATION
The School of Natural Resources and Environment, The
University of Michigan, is seeking to fill a full-time,
nine-month, tenure-track position in Environmental Education
/ Communication at the level of Assistant Professor, to be
filled by September 1996. Review of applications begins
September 5, 1995.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have a doctorate in the
social or natural sciences with demonstrated research
interest and ability in environmental education and
communication. A successful candidates research would focus
on knowledge-based interventions with respect to
environmental or resource issues. The acquisition, sharing,
effectiveness, or impact of resource/environmental
information would all be appropriate aspects of this area of
study. The settings for such research can include
individual, community, corporate, and/or organizational
contexts. Teaching as well as research excellence are
expected.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teach a minimum of three courses annually, including
an upper-level undergraduate course in environmental
education and/or communication, a Masters level
course dealing with cutting-edge issues in
environmental education or communication, and an
advanced graduate seminar in ones specialty.
2. Develop a strong conceptually-focused research
program. This research may be qualitative and/or
quantitative in nature but must lead to peer-reviewed
publications. The research program should be
supportive of ones teaching portfolio and the
Schools integrative, interdisciplinary approach to
environmental problem-solving.
3. Direct interdisciplinary graduate research;
participate in the academic counseling of graduate
and undergraduate students; and supervise doctoral
and masters students including integrative, group-
based masters projects.
4. Build cooperative ties with relevant University-wide
programs and departments involved with environmental
education and communication issues.
The School of Natural Resources and Environment is a
research-oriented professional school focusing on the
development of policies and management programs that promote
the conservation, protection, and sustained use of natural
resources, and on the training of practitioners and
researchers that will seek these ends. Faculty in the
School are diverse. The Schools programs are committed to
integrative, interdisciplinary problem-solving. It is
important for applicants to possess attitudes and interests
fostering excellence in both a specific area of
specialization and interdisciplinary activities in teaching
and research.
