The organization RESULTS has done a great deal with this.

Sorry, I don't have a good contact handy right now -- but if
you don't get an address from someone else, I could find a
local contact and pass it on.

We are thinking of applying their methods to some local homeless
and formerly homeless women.

Greetings,

I have a friend doing some research on microlending and the pro's/con's of
it. He asked me if I knew of any references, so I thought I'd ask you all
(your collective minds contain much more info than mine alone). He's
interested in ways that women throughout the world are getting out of the
rut of poverty and lack of education etc. and changing their lives and their
communities. If anyone has some good references, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Peace to each of you.

Hello Kim, I'm from Asia and I know the Bangladeshi institution known as the
Grameen Bank has had great success with microlending. If you can access
recent copies of Asiaweek (within the last year, sorry I can't be more
specific!), there's an article about the man who founded the bank -- he was
cited as one of the century's 20 Great Asians. (It's the cover story, so it
shouldn't be too hard to find.) I'm sure there's a lot of literature out
there on the Grameen Bank -- it's the stuff of legend here. You may want to
check out the archives of the UN Development Program as well.

I know that in my own country, the Philippines, an alliance of gov't,
non-gov't, and private sector organizations are trying to put together a
trust that would do microlending on a large scale -- as the mainstream
banking industry is definitely not into it. I forgot the name of the trust,
but I can look it up for you if you want.

If you need more help (not that I've been much help!), please e-mail me at

Good luck!
