Hello,
My name is Marie. I am french, and I must say that sometime I don't
really understand the motivations of people to become vegetarian.
Men and women eat meat not because the consumption of animal flesh leads
directly to the promotion of male muscles and virility as someone said,
but becaus it is a very good meal!!!!!
I cannot imagine the French Cook without meat. I hope this will never
happen.
Well cooked meat is the finest food you can eat. So please, don't miss
this! It is good for your health ( a minority of people suffer from
cholesterol, so majority of people can eat meat without any probleme. And
don<t tell me that meat is fatening, if you think so , just have a
look at the rest of the food you eat and make a comparison between
hamburgers, fries, coke and pepsi, pies and cakes and...meat.
That my opinion!

to see the similarities between meat-eating and feminism is not "dumb".
Please read Carol Adams book The Sexual Politics of Meat for the best source
of info on the similarities.

also, no where does it say that you must be a vegetarian to be an ecofeminist
(whatever those terms mean), but this list seems to have some ardent
defenders for meat-eating. It is one thing to have a peice ofmeat
occassionally, knowing full well the consequences for your own body and for
the environment. I know many people who refrain from meat eating, but under
speical (and I don't mean holidays) circumstances will eat some meat. This
is different, I think, than using silly arguments like "well why do you eat
plants then" to defend your meat consumption. Because an eagle eats a salmon
does not necessarily make it your "right" or make it ethical for you to eat a
salmon.

I have heard these arguments for many years but usually from people who have
no or very little knowledge of the connections between environmental
destruction and meat-eating. SOmeone mentioned that there are other ways to
"fix" the problems of rainforest destruction. We shouldn't have to give up a
"Whopper". It seems simple, if everyone gave up Whoppers, then Burger King
would certainly not be inclined to cut down the rainforests to provide more
cattle for their burgers. Of course, it is not as simple as that, there are
also conditions of workers, displacement of indigenous peoples, the pollution
and corruption of transnational companies, the imperialism of american fast
food, and on and on. These are many reasons to NOT buy your whopper. When
you eat that meat you should be aware of what you are supporting, just like
with any other product you purchase. This may not be the only way to "fix"
the problems of environmental destrcution, but it definitely is one that is
completely in your control.

I work, go to graduate school, and devote many hours to my community, and
still I have not eaten meat in many many years. This is not
self-congratulation, but evidence that that myth of "it takes more time to
eat vegetarian" is in fact a myth. Tru you cannot run out an purchase your
whopper, but a veggie burger takes about seven minutes in your own kitchen.
Environmetnal responsibility is worth seven minutes.

Betty asks about dogs and cats eating meat -- there are foods available
commercially for those who want to transform their pets into
vegetarians, tho I do not feed them myself.
My dogs are athletes (competition obedience dogs) and eat a
performance food sold in pet supply stores [a caveat: I do not
patronize pet stores that sell puppies and kittens -- pet store
puppies and kittens are most frequently the product of puppy mills and
irresponsible breeders. More to the point, puppies who spent important
developmental periods isolated from people, as they do in pet stores,
miss out on socialization time, and therefore are poor prospects for
happy and well-adjusted lives with people]. Feeding dogs a sole diet of raw
(or cooked) meat is inadequate nutritionally, as is a vegetarian diet
unless it's commercially prepared (and more nutritionally sound).

FWIW, there are several thousand years of domestication
separating our companion animals from their nearest wild cousins.
Wolves eat raw meat and all kinds of animal *by products*. Dogs need
certain nutrients *found* in meat (and other foods), but need not eat
meat to survive.

Enviroment degradation? Fast food very often saves time, both to prepare
and consume and time saving can result in saved resources and higher
personal productivity. What I mean by that is that rather than spending all
day chasing goats for a bit of milk and a 1000 other tasks one can
concentrate on what one does best say being a graphic artist and this
rsults in a higher personal income so I have more to spend at the end of a
day. I know this is called division of labor--each does what one does best
rather than doing everything oneself. A good example is that few of us make
our own clothes or shoes anymore because it is cheaper and more efficient
to have someone really good at it do it or a machine. Fast food has these
advantages. You might have to go without the best tasting food but you can
sure save time for use in more productive things.

Sexism? We know what that is but it doesn't have anything to do with
eating. Pizza and burgers are everybodys food. I think the idea that its
just food for men is very sexist and the same with the silly notion that
meat is just for men. What are real women suposed to eat, peanuts? Meat is
for me too. In fact its great advantage is that it has a lot of protein in
a small quantity. Its concentrated. Humans need less of it than a whole
bunch of fruits and veggies for the same result which is health, energy and
tissue building and repair. I do agree that many humans eat to much meat,
but a little is very good for us. So I think eating meat as sexism could be
a red herring.

And speciesim? Its just a fact that we are at the top of the food chain.
Plankton is at the bottom and cows somewhere in between. If it is specism
for me to eat certain other animals then it is even more so for animals
that pick on just one other species for food like eagles which are always
harrassing salmon almost exclusively. To avoid specieism I guess we should
eat everything that moves. Anyway the feminist and enviro movements have
too many isms and a lot of the stuff we read and hear sound like old left
propaganda or the new victimology sillyness.
