Has there ever been a Matriarchal society?
I am a 37 year old professional taking a "sabbatical" and going back to
school full time. In virtually all my classes I am integrating a feministic
theme in my choice of research topics. This all started with an assigned
topic of ECOFEMINISM...see the ecofeminism internet site I have
created(below), but start with my personal link that dicusses MATRIARCHY and
the individual Power & Persuation of women over men.
No, this is not one of those wimin control men sexually, although that
aspect I intend to explore. My matriarchical journey started in my
anthropology class when my professor, a PHD, said that she often debated
with feminists over the existence of a truley matriarchal society that
mirrors the domination of our patriarchal social sysytems today or ever in
the past. She sais, " there has never been a truely visible matriarchal
society, governed and dominated by wimin.
As I conduct my research I'm guessing that the debate is semantical and
everyone involved really has there own definition that drives there
opinion...The real issue is about power and domination. And as wimin create
alliances with feminists and ecologists there is strength in numbers. But
what about the average individual womin. What hope does she have against a
man when it comes to power and domination other than brute strength? Maybe
it doesn't matter or maybe there is an opportunity for empowerment from an
anthropological and or sociological point of view.

1. Has there ever been an non mythical matriarchal society?
2. How does or can an individual womin in human culture counter the
domination of man? Is it intellectual, spiritual, ecological, familial...?
3. Other than uniting in influential groups, which is probably the most
practical method of achieving feminist goals, is there perhaps an invisible
matriarchical power in human culture that, if more wimin and men were
conscious of, could also facilitate feminist ideals?
