With respect to my questions about bringing disposable razors for women in
Cuba a colleague of mine who spent a summer in Cuba just after the revolution
tells me that many Cuban women do not shave their legs, but the reason is to
distinguish themselves as hispanic, rather than native <as native or Indian
people tend to have less body hair>.  What do we make of that?

JOB/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN A RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PROJECT IN
THE WESTERN GHATS, KARNATAKA, INDIA

Two positions are available in an ongoing research and enterprise project in
Biligiri Ranga Swamy Temple Sanctuary (approx. 80 km from Mysore) in Karnataka,
India. The project is designed to determine the biological and socio-economic
aspects of resource management and to help the Soligas, a tribal group residing
within the sanctuary, in the sustainable management of non-timber forest
products and in enterprise development. Some enterprises are already up and
running and involve processing of non-timber forest products. Requirements for
both positions include a background in one or more of the following areas of
specializations: ecology, natural resources, social sciences, and enterprise
development. The work involves stay and movement within a wildlife sanctuary
and requires permission from the Karnataka Forest Dept.; therefore only Indian
citizens need apply. 'Single person' accommodation will be provided.

1. Project Coordinator: Responsibilities for this position include coordination
of activities concerned with enterprise development, biological monitoring, and
participation of Soligas in all activities of the project. Coordinator will
work with a staff of 6-8 persons representing the ecological, socio-economic,
and enterprise components of the project. Excellent opportunity for a person
who has a masters or doctoral degree. This position is for one year and is
based in India with the possibility of support for a few months in the U.S.
Salary for stay in India will be in Indian rupees and is negotiable. Preference
will be given to persons fluent in Kannada.

2. Research Associate: Responsibilities include socio-economic monitoring of
household determinants of resource use, monitoring of benefits to the Soligas,
and ensuring the participation of the Soligas in enterprise development. Salary
will be in Indian rupees in the range of Rs. 5,000 to 6,000 per month. A
bachelors degree and fluency in Kannada are required.
