Perhaps of interest - my partner is coming out with an anthology called
"The Soul Unearthed: Celebrating Wildness and Personal Renewal Through
Nature" from Tarcher/Putnam... it's got over 60 pieces (stories, essays,
poetry) about the transformative power of the wilderness. Includes such
contributors as Dolores La Chapeelle, Terry Tempest Williams, Joan
Halifax, Deena Metzger, Brenda Peterson, Maxine Kumin.... It's due out
9/10/96.

things: the beauty that is being lost as most of the indigenous cultures of
the planet are being "altered" or destroyed, and the fact that many of these
cultures have lived sustainably for thousands of years (many in
rainforests). At first I was naive, since I believed that the answer was
obviously to preserve indigenous cultures as much as possible. However,
that doesn't seem to be an option. I also haven't given up my "western"
life-style, but I hate the idea that the indigenous peoples of the world
have no choice in giving up theirs. However, I did give up on my research,
at least for now.
