some discussion and response: first, thank you for the action and also
your description of your engagement at headwaters!! i have saved it to
share with my youngest son who is concerned about trees here. i will
attempt brevity here, leaping and layering like haiku, so fill in with
your own wisdom.
trees: i suspect at least one buddha's realization involved sharing
consciousness with a tree.
thirteen moons, an old calendar before the sun was primary, when the
earth was endowed with cyclical rythmns of sacred process (how the
vestiges of guilt for violence are still projected.) a moon for each
member of a sacred circle, coven.
samhain's spiral.
avoiding arrogance... this is a difficult art. last night i expressed
my belief that an edge of uncertainty, favoring the unexpected keeps us
present, learningwhat works and not replaying... timing keeping an edge,
what it requires... in your account the loss of morale, the rain itself
protecting the forest, a blessing. this is a place for deepening in my
aesthetic, evolving into something new by becoming vulnerable again
ecology and that awareness ... integrates different voices senses
chorus, interdependency... even workers are included in this. elegance
teaches respect for old life, elders... is inclusive. we begin by
wondering how to root and make whole. this may take images, myths and
their unpacking, other ways of speaking and moving awareness too.
restoration, resitution... what is given back to the system we so
mightily deplete? what offering? balances and completes the cycle...
even a penny for taking a plant... who speaks to these trees? what for
our energy, our cars and rayon dresses from rainforest growth, the
unmerciful debt that is paid in trees, our economy growing desert and
new human sufferings
and finally your reference to tampons and damage to womyns reproductive
tract... so watershed, those chemicals
the metaphor
as if this is All about protecting a womyns reproductive tract
(grandmother growth) green womyn all around us, growing
you might have seen this. it was so clear to me.
some awareness requires multisensory engagement to fully orchestrate...
images are powerful for mammals, the sudan, the holocaust, zaire,
altamira... we cannot all be with the trees now but a powerful story
will move us to expression, to repetition between friends... details and
presence inform this. yes, i was yearning for more, the smell and taste
of the breath of these ancient life forms... (beside which we seem...

Hi, I have followed the list for some time now. I would like to solicit
some help on an ecofeminist literary critique I am writing on
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I would be interested in any concrete
definitions list subscribers have for the new term ecofeminism. Do you
agree that ecofeminists focus upon the parallel domination of women and
the environment? If so, why? Conversely, if not why not? I personally
believe that this definition lends itself to essentialism; women are
'naturally' closer to nature, etc. Isn't this what the movement should
attempt to avoid? What do you think? I'd love to hear some responses to
this! Thanks!

It doesn't necessarily entail essentialism at all. Read Val Plumwood or
Karen Warren or Chaia Heller for example. I fear you might have difficulty
defining 'ecofeminism' since it is certainly not monolithic. You might
want to read Carol J adams book - "The Sexual Politics Of Meat" (If you
have not done so already) as she discusses Shelley's Frankenstein in
some depth if memory serves...
