"AMERICAN PLACES: INTERPRETING THE AMERICAN CULTURAL LANDSCAPE"
American Heritage Center Sixth Annual History Symposium
September 25-27, 1997
University of Wyoming
Laramie, Wyoming

    The program committee for the sixth annual American Heritage
Center Symposium requests from academics, practitioners, and the
general public proposals for papers and sessions which will interpret
the American Place.  Areas of inquiry could include Sacred Places,
such as Devils Tower and other sites sacred to Native Americans;
Public Spaces, such as parks and recreation areas; Signature
Landscapes, including such topics as Ellis Island and Independence
Rock; Imaginative Landscapes (paintings, poetry, and fiction);
Contested Places; and Media Landscapes (film and television).

    Poster sessions also will be presented during the symposium.
Tables (4' by 6') will be available for posters and handouts.  A few
Internet and electrical connections will be available for the poster
sessions.

    For papers and panels submit an abstract between 100 and 500
words.  Also include the title of the presentation, the full name of
all presenters, institutional affiliations, mailing addresses,
telephone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and any special
requirements such as slide projectors and other equipment.

    For poster sessions please include the above-mentioned
information as well as space and internet and electrical needs.

    PROPOSALS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEBRUARY 27, 1997.

    Participants will be notified by mid-March, 1997

    Conference registration fees will be waived for all presenters,
moderators, and poster session presenters.  A small honorarium will
be provided as well as some assistance for travel and lodging.
