Hi Vera;
Vera asked for positive roles for Barbie. I wanted to share
happily that I am an artist and once in a while use Barbie dolls in my
work. First, I use second-hand and even found Barbies. Second, one
positive role I put Barbie in is Artist. Artist Barbie paints pictures of
other famous Barbies, and in one she painted Goddess Barbie, who (among
other things) organizes a union of women wh work in "The all Goddess Peep
Show" (just to remind feminists that even the divine is chronically
commoditized). Goddess Barbi also types the union's newsletter. Third, in
some Christian bookstores, you can buy outfits for Barbie-sized dolls that approximate
Mary- in some
traditions of Christianity, Mary is celebrated for more than her place in
a patriarchy (I hope that doesn't offend ayone). Finally, I think you
will find Vera, that no matter how hard Mattell might try to preserve
Barbie's corporate image, girls and boys (and grown ups like myself and
hundreds of others) provide her with new meaning (we all know little kids
that have tattooed their Barbie, for example!)
One final Barbie image is one where her eyes are closed- she is
the opposite to artist Barbie for me, and is basd in the very startling
'Sleepy Time' or something Barbie, where her eyes can be opened and
closed with swipes of warm or cold water. Very spooky! Have Fun, I hope
Artist is one of your Barbie's roles!
