FYI...Stefanie ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Dear Colleague The Canadian Museum of Nature in association with Queen's University will be hosting a lecture by Dr. Tom Lovejoy of The Smithsonian Institution entitled "Forging Global Biodiversity Policy" on August 7th at 7pm in the Victoria Memorial Building of the Museum in Ottawa (Metcalfe and McLeod Sts.). As a biologist with a long history in what is now considered Conservation, Dr. Lovejoy is perhaps best known for his ability to implement the findings of the scientific community of which he is a part. He is the originator of countless conservation intiatives (e.g. debt-for-nature swaps) and scientific projects (e.g. Minimum Critical Size of Ecosystems) and continues to form policy at the highest levels of governmental and non-governmental organizations. With this perspective he is indeed well-situated to discuss the current and future directions of biodiversity conservation at a global scale. Dr. Lovejoy is currently Counselor to the Secretary for Biodiversity and Environmental Affairs of the Smithsonian Institution. Among other committments, he is Co-Chair for the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources under the Executive Office of the (United States) President's National Science and Technology Council. This lecture is the final in this year's running of The International Summer School on Biodiversity & Systematics (http://biology.queensu.ca/~biodiv).
