THERE ARE STILL TWO DAYS LEFT IN THE NATIONAL CALL-IN WEEK ON LANDMINES.
The message is still: "SIGN THE OTTAWA TREATY, NO LOOPHOLES, NO
EXCEPTIONS!!!"

I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CALL EACH DAY (202/456-1111). When I called yesterday,
the woman interrupted my spiel to ask whether I was for the Ottawa Treaty
or not, a clear indication that they are getting lots of calls!!! They also
still have the poll on NATO expansion, so you can punch #2 to oppose NATO
expansion and feed two birds with one hand, as it were.

Also yesterday, I took 8 American University volunteers to leaflet at the
Farragut North and Farragut West metros handing out a thousand of the 1/4
page fliers on the Call-in Week. One of the students was confronted by
someone who said it was their job to make sure there wasn't a ban on
landmines (unfortunately I was at a different corner, so I can't tell you
whether the person was govt. or private, or what). But the point is that
there are folks out there working hard with a diametrically opposition
position, favoring landmines (booo!). We have to put in the effort to
counter their mistaken position!

In addition to the leafletting, we have over a 1,000 responses from one of
our funding appeals which are letters to Clinton asking him to abandon the
exceptions and adopt a comprehensive ban now. One of the students has been
standing over the fax machine and faxing a bunch each day to Bob Bell,
National Security Council, with a message to deliver them to Pres. Clinton
and to sign the Ottawa Treaty, NO EXCEPTIONS!!
